However, Rosie Perez, a Hollywood legend, former Oscar nominee, and boxing enthusiast, will not just be another face in the crowd. She will be stationed ringside as an analyst, providing round-by-round updates on the fight.
Perez, a Brooklyn native, rose to fame in Spike Lee’s iconic film ‘Do The Right Thing’ in 1989 and has since starred in numerous major films and TV shows. Rosie Perez’s Oscar Nomination
Perez received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Peter Weir’s 1993 film Fearless. However, she was bested by X-Men actress Anna Paquin, who clinched the award for The Piano.
Despite this, Perez did secure several awards for her role at New York, Boston, and Chicago film award ceremonies. She has also earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations throughout her illustrious career.
Beyond her acting accolades, Perez is recognized for her activism and was appointed to The Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 2010 by then-US President Barack Obama.
Rosie Perez’s Personal Life
Perez’s personal life has been as captivating as it has been tumultuous. Abandoned as an infant, Perez was raised by her aunt.
Her mother reappeared when she was three, only to send her to a strict Catholic convent school in upstate New York with several of her half-siblings. From there, Perez transitioned between group foster homes, where she encountered abuse and numerous obstacles.

However, her career took off when filmmaker Spike Lee noticed her dancing. Following a stint on ‘Soul Train’, Hollywood came calling and she hasn’t looked back since.
Despite her extensive film credits, Perez is now affectionately known as “the first lady of boxing”. In her home state of New York, she’s a familiar face at the ringside, not just for high-profile title fights but also at smaller, local bouts, while her personal experience in the ring makes her uniquely qualified to comment on Tyson and Paul.
“I learned how to box because I used to get beat up a lot. And I was scrappy. I would always fight back all the time, even though I would lose,” she said to The Guardian in 2022. “That’s another reason why I like boxing so much because it takes so much tenacity and discipline to become a champion.”
Perez tied the knot with filmmaker and playwright Seth Zvi Rosenfeld in 1998, but they parted ways in 2001 after a decade together. She found love again with artist Eric Haze, marrying him on September 15, 2013, in Las Vegas. Since 2014, they’ve made their home in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.
