Brian McDavid was “overcome” with emotion as he watched his son, Connor McDavid, become the fourth-fastest player to reach 1,000 points in the NHL.
The Edmonton Oilers captain sniped one from close range at 2:44 of the second period after being assisted by Leon Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse to send the 18,347 fans inside Rogers Place wild. One of those in attendance was McDavid’s father, and the broadcast cut to him looking emotional after witnessing the historic moment.
McDavid, 27, has reached 1,000 points in just 659 games (341 goals, 660 assists), meaning only Wayne Gretzky (424 games), Mario Lemieux (513), and Mike Bossy (656) hit that milestone faster. McDavid is considered the best active player in the NHL, and is well on his way to being considered in the all-time conversation.
Brian McDavid reflected on the moment after the game, and told Sportsnet: “I mean I was speechless, and as most people will tell you, I’m rarely speechless. I was overcome. I was quite emotional, actually I had to choke back a little bit. It’s been an amazing journey. I’m just so glad I was able to see it.”

McDavid’s goal in the second period tied the game, which ended 2-2 after regulation. Fittingly, McDavid registered point No. 1001 in overtime when linking up with Draisaitl and Nurse again to hand Edmonton a 3-2 win on the night.
While it’s a huge personal milestone for McDavid, as he became the 99th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points, his goal remains winning the championship with the Oilers after losing the Stanley Cup Finals last season. “His only goal is to win the Stanley Cup here in Edmonton,” Brian McDavid added.
“He came here when he was 18 years old, and he’s grown from being a boy to a man. He loves Edmonton, he understands where he sits in hockey. The history of the championship teams here with Wayne (Gretzky) and Mark (Messier) and he more than anything wants to bring a Stanley Cup to Edmonton. We are more than helpful.”
McDavid is the leader in Edmonton, but he was humbled by how his teammates acted after he scored in the second period. “Just seeing the way the players reacted, that means everything to me,” McDavid said after the game. “Obviously, my teammates were happy and to hear the fans, that stuff means more to me than any of the numbers or anything like that.

“It was a really special moment, honestly. These milestones are a great time to reflect and a great time to look back. It’s been a great 10 years, and hopefully there are 10 more good ones.”
Of those 1,000 points, McDavid has linked up with Draisaitl for 445 and Nurse for 103. The trio all share a special bond on and off the ice, and McDavid was happy to share the moment with some of his closest teammates.
“That means everything,” McDavid concluded. “They are teammates, guys you go to battle with, the guys that have been here forever through the good times and the bad times. You build a brotherhood, you build a bond, and we certainly got that.
“These moments are a great time to look back and appreciate the things and the people that mean a lot to you. Those two certainly are both.”
