Jake Paul is said to be in talks with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr for a boxing bout which could shockingly be sanctioned for a WBA world championship.
Paul has been looking for his next opponent after defeating 58-year-old Mike Tyson in a much-maligned bout, with the YouTuber-turned-boxer admitting he was frustrated with how the fight panned out. And if reports are true, then he looks like he’s about to face what will be, by far, the toughest fight of his career to date.
Former world middleweight champion Cesar Chavez Jr, the son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, has stated that he has indeed been approached about potentially fighting Paul.

He told reporters: “It’s an option, we’re looking into it, let’s see, this week I have a meeting. I’d be interested in fighting a champion, but fighting Jake Paul for the fame and the media would put me in a position to fight against others. I’m not looking for it, it’s been presented. It’s not concrete, but let’s see what happens.”
In his prime, Chavez Jr had been world champion at middleweight, claiming big victories over Peter Manfredo Jr, Carlos Molina and Marco Antonio Rubio – while also going 12 rounds with Canelo Alvarez and Sergio Martinez.
However, the Mexican is now coming toward the end of his career, facing former UFC fighters in Uriah Hall and Anderson Silva – the latter who he had been defeated by before Paul went on to defeat the Brazilian.
Chavez Jr had claimed victories in 54 of his 61 fights but has only fought once since 2021 – in what was a less-than-thrilling fight against Hall on Paul’s undercard when he defeated MMA star, turned bare-knuckle boxer Mike Perry, earlier this year.
Incredibly, claims have been made that the fight could be sanctioned for a WBA championship, despite the two not having fought in championship-caliber bouts.
After Paul’s win over Tyson this past month, the WBA’s sanctioning body’s president, Gilberto Mendoza, stated: “I will insist. I would love to see Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr for a championship.”
Neither Paul nor Chavez Jr are ranked fighers in the WBA, meaning that a minor title would be put on the line for a bout. Should Paul win, though, he’d become a ranked fighter and claim well up the rankings – making his audacious dreams of fighting the likes of Alvarez for a world title an actual possibility.
