Al Michaels was forced to explain to what happened during the Kansas City Chiefs Black Friday matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
In the first quarter, Las Vegas pinned Kansas City at the 1-yard line on a punt, and a penalty was called on the Chiefs, putting them at the half-yard line. Amazon went into a commercial break, but viewers were confused when the game returned, as Kansas City found themselves on the 23.
While the play was head scratching for those streaming the game, what happened was that during the break, the penalty call was overturned and the ball re-kicked, which was why the ball was where it was. Once the broadcast returned, Michaels filled fans in on what they missed.

“Alright, so while you were outta of the kitchen, here’s what happened,” Michaels began. “When we left you, went to commercial, Clay Martin had said the penalty was against the Chiefs. He meant it was against the Raiders.
“So after the teams had gone down to the half-yard line to start a Chiefs drive, he realized the penalty was not on the Chiefs, it was on the Raiders. So they had to re-kick while you were gone. We’re still here with you. The ball is now at the 23-yard line.”
Fans on social media were left wondering why the play wasn’t televised as the streaming giant when to break in what was confusing turn of events. “Only the Chiefs could gain 23 yards of field position while literally in a commercial break, and only the Raiders could lose it,” one fan wrote on X.

Another wrote: “Amazon Prime stream of Raiders at Chiefs is horrible. Picture quality is terrible. Cameras are not handling the harsh laughing. And missed a kickoff.”
Meanwhile, another post was added, stating: “The Amazon broadcast misses a punt play after an administrative error by the officials, originally a penalty against the Chiefs instead of the Raiders. The fixing of the penalty call and the re-punt by the Raiders occurred while Amazon was in a commercial break.”
By all accounts, fans were not happy with how the streaming giant handled the situation, leading to Michaels’ explanation after the fact. However, the play did not appear consequential as neither Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs could create any separation from the Raiders.
In the first quarter, Kansas City only posted three points after Las Vegas’ defense kept Mahomes in check for most of the quarter. The Raiders scored three points of their own in the second quarter, before Mahomes connected with Justin Watson for the touchdown.
Before the matchup, Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce caught flak for revealing his thoughts on Las Vegas’ matchup with Kansas City very clear. Speaking to reporters, Pierce stated: “Let’s call a spade a spade, [it’s] the best team in football against the worst team in football.
“Let’s change the narrative, right? Let’s just go out there, make it a dog fight, make it ugly, make it scrappy. It’s Black Friday; let’s create a little chaos. Get back to Raider football and have some fun and [show] some personality and let it loose.”
