49ers Pro Bowler projected to land $45 million deal this offseason image

The San Francisco 49ers already have made one huge move this offseason.

San Francisco cut ties with receiver Deebo Samuel with a trade to the Washington Commanders. Free agency kicks off across the National Football League next week and there could be even more 49ers stars on the way out of town.

The 49ers are in a tricky spot financially right now and there are just too many stars on the roster to pay. San Francisco cornerback Charvarius Ward is someone heading to free agency that it wouldn’t be surprising if he is wearing another jersey in 2025. He’s a Pro Bowler and one of the better free-agent cornerbacks out there this year.

Someone is going to pay him well and Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame and Gilberto Manzano ranked him as the No. 8 overall free agent this year and projected him to land a three-year, $45 million deal.

“No. 8. Charvarius Ward, CB, San Francisco 49ers,” Verderame and Manzano said. “Projected contract: Three years, $45 million. Age: 28. Not many cornerbacks played better than Ward in 2023 when he helped the 49ers make the Super Bowl. But Ward is coming off a challenging season away from the football field after his daughter passed away. Ward was a bargain signing for San Francisco after agreeing to a three-year, $42 million contract with the former Chiefs standout in 2022. Ward, a Pro Bowler last season, started his career as an undrafted free agent for the Cowboys in ’18.”

Ward is a great player and it would be nice to have him back, but the 49ers may not be able to afford that type of deal, especially with Brock Purdy’s future up in the air and a large deal needed to keep him.
