Johnny Manziel is predicting a strong first season for Arch Manning with Texas, but he believes he’ll face some challenges along the way in the SEC.
Manning will finally get his chance to be the starter at Texas after two years of sitting behind Quinn Ewers. Manning has made two starts and played in lieu of Ewers for a few drives, but this will be the first year in which the offense will be built around his strengths.
Among the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy, the nephew of both Peyton and Eli Manning comes into the year with Texas fans excited about what they expect to see from him.
Speaking on ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ Manziel spoke on how he believes Manning will perform in his first year.
He said: “I think hes going to live somewhere in the top three of the SEC play when its all said and done.
“I think with the people that hes had around him, the way that he was raised, the way that hes grown up, I think hes prepared for what he is getting himself into.”
Despite this, Manziel, who flopped in the NFL after winning the Heisman Trophy, knows more than anyone that the road will not be easy for Manning.
Yet Manning is better prepared for this opportunity, coming from a family with three former NFL quarterbacks.
When it comes down to it, it is SEC football, he said. They are going to scheme for him, they are going to be prepared for him, they know what kind of quarterback he is. So youre getting everybodys best shot.”
When asked if he believes Manning will be in the Heisman Trophy picture by the end of the season, Manziel said: “Its tough to pick anybody thats going to walk across the stage in New York in August.
“Its really hard, and its almost better to not be the guy with the best odds going into it, because I can look back throughout the years, the odds-on favorite going into the season really hasnt ever been the winner when its all said and done.
“But he has the opportunity with the schedule, he has the opportunity with the conference, to do everything that he needs to do to be in New York.”

This week, Manning’s GPA from high school was released, with the quarterback’s numbers impressing, a trait that many deem important for the position he plays.
Manning has maintained a 3.50 GPA in the classroom. Taking advantage of NCAA early signing rules, Manning inked a financial-aid agreement that paved the way for him to enroll at the University of Texas. He graduated from high school in December and will attend classes this spring semester, Mannings 2022-23 profile reads.
Although Texas does have an easier schedule than in recent years, Manning opens his career as a starter against arguably the toughest opponent in the NCAA in Ohio State.
The Longhorns will travel to Ohio Stadium for the opener on August 30.
