Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield couldn’t hide his resignation as he reacted to losing the overtime coin toss against Patrick Mahomes.

The Bucs took the back-to-back Super Bowl champions and the only team remaining in the NFL with a perfect record the entire distance on Monday Night Football. Entering the game with a 4-4 record, Tampa were unable to defend their seven-point advantage in the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs as the game went to overtime 24-24.

The viral moment from the game occurred as the contest reached its climax in the overtime period. Both quarterbacks were called to the midfield for the crucial coin toss which would determine possession. Mayfield called for tails but after the referee flipped the coin to land on heads, the Buccaneers signal caller’s reaction said everything.

With the Chiefs winning the toss, Mahomes called that his side would receive the ball first to put the Buccaneers on the back foot. Mayfield tilted his head back and looked up at the sky in a mix of resignation and disbelief, immediately knowing the odds had sharply turned against the Bucs.

The Chiefs duly capitalized on their advantage, executing a drive that won 70 yards in just 10 plays and ended in a touchdown run by Kareem Hunt. The Bucs never touched the ball in overtime with Mayfield’s reaction vindicated by the challenge that the controversial coin toss had brought against them.

As Mayfield’s reaction circled on social media, fans responded with their thoughts on the quarterback’s reaction while others took aim at the coin toss effectively deciding the game. “Body language from both QBs showed us who was going to win,” one fan wrote.

A second user criticized the rules, calling for both teams to have the opportunity with the ball instead of a decisive coin toss, insisting: “The overtime rules need to change!” A third added: “Once Mahomes got the ball, it was game over. You could feel the momentum shift instantly.” While another slammed the rules and suggested an alternative: “For the millionth time a coin toss shouldn’t determine a game like this. It would quite literally be better if they had the two punters go out there and see who can punt it the furthest for the win,” they wrote.

Mahomes overcame an early injury scare to throw three touchdowns on 28-of-35 passing with 230 yards to extend the Chiefs record to 8-0 this season. Meanwhile, Mayfield was unable to guide the Bucs back to winning form having lost their previous two games before heading to the Arrowhead Stadium. The first overall pick in the 2018 draft threw two touchdowns and went 23-of-31 passing with 200 yards.
