Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis has been by her husband’s side throughout his battle with frontotemporal dementia and has been his full-time caregiver since 2022
Bruce Willis’ wife has delivered some major news to her supporters on social media this week as she opened up about her reason to be “grateful.”
Emma Heming Willis posted on Instagram following her attendance at a significant gathering at the California State Capitol, where legislators approved a resolution officially designating September 21-27 as Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) Awareness Week.
The 46-year-old model and writer, who has served as her husband’s primary caregiver since his diagnosis with the brain disorder frontotemporal dementia became public in 2022, appeared alongside representatives from the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) and other campaigners at the Capitol on Monday, August 18.
Sharing the announcement on her profile that evening, she stated, “We are grateful to the California Legislature for recognizing FTD Awareness Week; September 21st-27th and to the elected officials who made this possible.”
“This resolution is more than symbolic, it’s a lifeline of recognition for every family touched by FTD,” she continued. Supporters filled the comments area with encouragement, with one posting, “wow!!!!” while others exclaimed, “Fantastic,” and “Stellar.”
Emma has been candid about her experience caring for Bruce, to whom she has been married for more than 15 years. The movie legend – famous for his performances in Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense – was originally diagnosed with aphasia before his illness advanced to frontotemporal dementia. She has been chronicling their experience ever since, and her candid openness has struck a chord with supporters worldwide.
Emma’s first memoir, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, is set to be released on September 9, detailing her life as a caregiver for someone with a progressive disease.
During a recent conversation, she remembered the heartbreaking day when Bruce got his official diagnosis. “On the day Bruce got his diagnosis, we left the doctor’s office with a pamphlet and a hollow goodbye. No plan, no guidance, no hope, just shock,” she said.
Emma continued, “The future we imagined simply vanished, and I was left trying to hold my family together, raise our two young daughters, and care for the man I love while navigating a disease I barely understood.”
Despite the devastating news, she had previously posted on her Instagram account that Bruce continues to feel “love, connection, joy, and happiness,” which she shared back in March 2024.
Unfortunately, the actor’s health has deteriorated. Reports emerged last month that Bruce can no longer recall his days as a globally recognized film star. His loved ones have since disclosed that he has lost his capacity to read, communicate and move around.
