The New York Jets retained The 33rd Team to support the organization through a search for a new head coach and general manager, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Per Schefter, former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will help lead the project. The 33rd Team will provide “data analysis and experience” to New York throughout the hiring process.

The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh on Oct. 8 before dismissing general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday.

Team owner Woody Johnson is still going to oversee the search for a new head coach and general manager, but the group from The 33rd Team will assist him as well as other Jets executives throughout the procedure (via CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones).

While the company hasn’t worked with a team throughout a coaching or front office search yet, Johnson and Tannenbaum already have history together. Tannenbaum served as New York’s general manager from 2006 through 2012.

The Jets finished with a record of 57-55 in his seven seasons with the team, making consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances in 2009 and 2010. The latter still represents the last time Gang Green made it to the playoffs.

Spielman has some experience with the hiring process, as he was an advisor for the Washington Commanders during their search for a new head coach and head of football operations during the 2024 offseason.

The Commanders ended up hiring Dan Quinn as head coach and Adam Peters as general manager. Both moves appear to be paying off already, as Washington owns a 7-5 record and currently holds a playoff spot in the NFC standings.

With Aaron Rodgers’ future in New York uncertain in the midst of a 3-8 start to the season, the team’s next coach and general manager will need to find an answer at quarterback.

Still, the Jets boast promising young players on both sides of the ball such as wide receiver Garrett Wilson, running back Breece Hall, cornerback Sauce Gardner and pass-rusher Will McDonald IV.
