The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback dilemma between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields appears to be nearing its resolution, with reports indicating that the team is leaning toward retaining the younger Fields as their future starter.
With both quarterbacks currently on the roster, the Steelers are faced with a difficult decision. Carrying both signal-callers into the 2025 season would likely create an unnecessary controversy, making it increasingly likely that Pittsburgh will part ways with one of them.
According to ESPN, the organization appears to be moving toward releasing the 36-year-old Wilson after just one season with the team.
Wilson initially had the advantage in the quarterback battle, having led the Steelers to a postseason berth last year. However, a late-season collapse saw Pittsburgh drop five straight games, including a playoff loss to division rival Baltimore, which reportedly diminished Wilson’s standing within the organization.
Despite his experience and past success as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, the Steelers seem to be prioritizing youth and potential over veteran leadership.
Team owner Art Rooney II previously stated that he wanted one of the two quarterbacks to sign a long-term deal, reinforcing the idea that Pittsburgh is looking for stability at the position.
Fields, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears last March after three seasons as their starter, may now be the team’s preferred choice to lead the franchise forward.

Fields began last season as the Steelers’ starter, posting a 4-2 record before being replaced by the more experienced Wilson. Head coach Mike Tomlin faced criticism for the switch, but Wilson handled the situation professionally and ultimately appeared in 10 games for the team. While Wilson’s leadership and poise were valuable assets, the Steelers may view Fields as a more dynamic option moving forward, given his athleticism and untapped potential.
If the Steelers officially decide to part ways with Wilson, he should have no shortage of suitors on the open market.
Several teams, including the New York Jets, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, and Las Vegas Raiders, are in search of a starting quarterback and do not hold one of the top two picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, making Wilson an attractive veteran option.
This decision carries significant weight for Pittsburgh, as the AFC continues to be stacked with elite quarterbacks.
The Steelers are making a bet on youth and upside over experience, hoping that Fields can emerge as their long-term answer at quarterback.
