Wrexham is reportedly eyeing a bid for Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie, as the January transfer window opens.
The Red Dragons are said to be ready to compete with League One rivals Huddersfield Town for the 27 year old’s services. The Scottish forward joined the Pilgrims in 2020 and has netted 64 goals in 230 appearances, helping the club rise from League Two to the Championship.
Plymouth is currently bottom of the Championship and without a manager after recently sacking Wayne Rooney. Football League World reports that Wrexham is eager to sign Hardie to bolster its promotion push with a $2.5m bid.

Phil Parkinson’s team is third in League One after a 2-1 loss at Barnsley on New Year’s Day. A move for Hardie would not be cheap for Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with his $2.5m valuation more than triple the club’s current record signing Mo Faal, who joined from West Brom for a reported fee of $730,000 during the summer.
However, Wrexham director Shaun Harvey previously confirmed funds will be made available to Parkinson this month as his team chases a third successive promotion. This comes as the club’s forwards have been struggling to find the net regularly this season, reports Wales Online.
Jack Marriott, Wrexham’s top scorer amongst their strikers with five goals, has been out of action since October due to a broken leg. Paul Mullin, the team’s talisman, has only scored twice in the league after having back surgery over the summer, while his strike partner Ollie Palmer has three goals to his credit.
Steven Fletcher, a seasoned striker, has saved Wrexham from embarrassment on several occasions recently by scoring late winners against Blackpool and Wigan after coming off the bench. Despite his four goals, manager Parkinson has had to carefully manage Fletcher’s playing time due to a knee injury.
Faal, on the other hand, has struggled for game time and missed yesterday’s loss to Barnsley due to illness. Wrexham is already being linked with several strikers ahead of the transfer window, including Leeds United star Patrick Bamford.
Harry Cornick, a forward for Bristol City, is also reportedly on their radar after being given the green light to explore his options in January.
Meanwhile, former Wrexham captain Ben Tozer has shared his predictions for the club’s January transfer window. The long-throw specialist, who spent three successful years with the Red Dragons after joining from Cheltenham Town in August 2021, helped them achieve back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two.
Now playing for Forest Green Rovers, Tozer recently returned to Wrexham to watch his old team beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 and shared his thoughts on the club’s upcoming transfer business.
Tozer believes that Wrexham doesn’t need to make a big splash in January. Speaking on the club’s live matchday coverage on YouTube, he said: “It shouldn’t be about breaking the million-pound barrier, it should be about signing the right player and that’s what the gaffer will absolutely do.”
