In an era where it’s common for stars to miss non-College Football Playoff bowl games, No. 20 Colorado announced they will be starting their aces against No. 17 BYU in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday.
To safeguard the futures of stars like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, the school will take out a “record” amount of injury insurance for their entire roster.
For both Heisman Trophy-winner Hunter and quarterback Sanders, Saturday’s game will be their last before the pair declare for the 2025 NFL Draft.
Head coach Deion Sanders seems to think the superstar duo are ticketed for the top of draft boards. “We happen to have two players that are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL draft,” Sanders said on Monday.
“We all know who those two are and they have received, I think, the highest number of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football,” he continued.
Hunter won the Heisman Trophy thanks to not only his 1,152 receiving yards and his 14 receiving touchdowns as a receiver but also his lockdown coverage and four interceptions as a cornerback.
Not to be outdone, Sanders was also a Heisman finalist. The coach’s son completed 74.2 percent of his passes for 3,926 yards with a sparking 35-8 touchdown-interception ratio.
Colorado’s Athletic Director Rick George echoed the sentiment to protect the school’s players with insurance and credited coach Sanders for pushing the initiative.
“It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury, that they would be well taken care of,” George said.
“So, we worked together on that. We’re excited about it. We think it’s great that all our players are playing in the game. That’s what all bowl games should be like.”
Some. of the best college football players in the country will miss their 2024/25 Bowl Games. Luter Burder III, a projected first-round pick receiver out of Missouri, will sit out the Music City Bowl. So will another projected first-rounder: LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell.
Last year, Drake Maye missed UNC’s involvement in the Mayo Bowl and Caleb Williams missed USC’s participation in the Holiday Bowl.
